Scientific symposium

What will be the symposium about?

The main topic of the symposium will be chosen from the field of biomedical research and will range from exploring the building blocks of life and the molecular mechanisms of disease to personalized medicine. The programme will comprise various formats of talks, formal and informal interaction activities:

Who will be involved?

Young promising researchers, in particular PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. They will intermix with prominent scientists, such as Nobel prize winners, ERC Grant awardees, and elected members of prestigious Academies, meet up with young researchers to discuss cutting-edge and interdisciplinary themes in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

  • Keynote lectures

Invited prestigious speakers will give a talk on their expertise areas.

  • Short-talks

Young researchers participating in the ENABLE symposium will be selected to present their current research results and goals.

  • Masterclasses

In-depth discussions around a central topic of the symposium with one of the keynote speakers. Students will be able to participate actively by preparing questions for the international lecturers, for example scrutinizing the design of a research project and proposing potential future lines of research.

  • College-Tour

Invited scientists will be asked questions from the audience on a range of topics (professional and personal), from what inspires them in daily life and research to their ambitions, likes and dislikes.

  • Poster presentations

The participants will be invited to show the results of their own research.

  • Round-table

Controversial topics related to scientific careers will be treated to generate interesting discussion and interaction within the panel and the audience. Examples topics could be “gender aspects in science” or “plagiarism and misconduct in science”.

Career workshop

What will you learn?

ENABLE will organise career markets to inspire you. From furthering your academic aspiration to switching gears into different fields, this will be the network event.

Who are these workshops planned for?

PhD students and postdoctoral researchers wanting to explore the next step in their career path but also undergraduates and MsC students who wish to find out about career opportunities.

Broaden your horizons - what are my career opportunities?

There are jobs outside of academia that are just right for you! Sectors like business development, quiality assurance, consutling or journalism are just some of the many options. In this workshop, scientists who decided to work in these “alternative” fields will tell you all about their experiences to guide you in your career decision-making.

How to achieve my professional goals

In your professional career within or outside os academia you will need more than “just” research experience. To know about all the requirements of the labour market and gain all those additional skills, this workshop will help PhD students and postdocs improve the areas of capability most needed for their own career development.

The career ladder: where is the next challenge?

Are you looking for a job that is right for you? This interactive carreer event will offer you the opportunity to meet first-hand scientific institues and companies seeking new talents and get to know what they are looking for. In a meet-and-greet format, the prospective employees and employers will have the chance to discuss whether their ambitions match.

Outreach activities

Activities for schools

The scientific method for children (primary school students)

children will learn the different steps of the scientific endeavour (observation, hypothesis formulation, testing and conclusion) through collective problem-solving strategies for a of practical scientific problems. Through this exercise, children will learn how science is practiced, develop critical thinking and collaborative thinking.

Biomedicine is out there (primary school and high-school students)

real experiments will be performed with the students to help them to understand basic molecular biology principles and techniques. This hands-on practice will contribute to increasing the curiosity of students and stimulate the formulation of questions in a scientific manner.

What is a scientist? (primary school and high-school students)

young researchers will talk about their daily life in the lab and interact with the students. This exercise is aimed to uncover the role of scientists, moving away from the stereotype, portraying them as normal human beings with a great deal of curiosity.

Online science (high- school students)

the role of the online world in the development of science will be introduced and students will get to participate in the advancement of science on the spot through their mobile phones. This activity will encourage teenagers to connect and engage in scientific research in a fun way.

Activities for the general public

Plenary lectures

Invited speakers will talk about general biomedical topics to provide insight into current research developments and the challenges that our scientists are facing today in order to discover the medicines of tomorrow.

Microtalks

In just 10 minutes, PhD students will summarize crucial biomedicine concepts in an engaging and entertaining way.

Ask the scientist

A debate on thought-provoking biomedical issues with interaction with the audience. The main goal is to tackle several “hot subjects” with great impact on our lives, so that the audience can express their concerns and/or hopes on these subjects

Closing cross-disciplinary session

A roundtable discussion involving the participation of 3-4 well-known ‘celebrity-status’ participants from various fields. One panellist will be a scientist, and 2-3 others will be from areas of particular interest to the local cultural context (eg. chefs, economists, artists…). The aim of this activity is to show how science is not an isolated entity but a multidisciplinary area of knowledge with interactions with all other areas in society.
